Looking for some new habits to benefit your overall wellness? Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning
Hydration is everything. And after a long night's rest, your body is parched and craving water. Give it what it needs by taking the first few moments of your day to hydrate. We like keeping a filled water bottle by our bedside or a glass on the nightstand—this way, the water is there and ready to drink as soon as we wake up. Hydrating first thing in the morning is an excellent habit to encourage healthy eating and choices throughout the day. While you may want to head straight for the coffee pot, do your body a favor by chugging some h2o.
2. Start your day with a few moments of gratitude and stretching
It's so easy to jump right into our day. When to-do lists call, and it seems there are never enough hours, we can forget to ease into our mornings. But taking the first few minutes of the day for yourself can do wonders for your mental health—and it can also encourage you to make healthy choices throughout the rest of the day. After drinking a big glass of water, set a timer for three to five minutes and do some simple stretches while reflecting on what you're grateful for.
3. Eat Something Green—First Thing
Okay, so it doesn't have to be first thing in the morning. But aim to include something leafy and green in the first meal of the day. This can be spinach in a smoothie, green juice, arugula mixed into your eggs or on toast. Whatever you decide, aim to eat something nutritious with your first meal. We promise this will help you better stay on track with eating goals for lunch and dinner too.
4. Read something before bed (not on your phone)
Another great habit that will benefit your overall wellbeing? Reading before bed. It doesn't have to be a novel, either. You can read a poem or comic book or even a children's book if you want a lighthearted or feel-good story. But spend the last 10 to 15 minutes before bed reading and engaging your mind. This is also helpful to wind down and break the habit of checking your phone before sleep.
