We're big believers in two things when it comes to our produce: buying local and buying organic. That's why we are proud that our Vukoo bars are made with organic ingredients, many of which are also local to Colorado.
With spring in full swing, farmers markets in Colorado are opening up for the season, and they are our absolute favorite place to shop. Is there anything better than picking out fresh produce in the spring sunshine?
Farmers markets are more than fun though; they are also fantastic for your health, your wallet, the community, AND the environment. Don't believe us? Here are just a few of the benefits of shopping at your local farmers market this season:
Organic Produce
We've already mentioned it, but it's worth saying again: farmers markets are excellent for organic produce. While buying organic can be hard on your wallet at the grocery store, organic fruit and veg when purchased directly from farmers are often more affordable. They are also excellent for your health. You can even speak directly with the growers to learn about farming methods and where your food came from.
In-Season & Local Produce
You won't find any mangos or papayas at the farmers market. That's because farmers markets only offer local and in-season produce. While this can be frustrating if you're used to having a wide selection of tropically-grown items, take heart in knowing that it's much better for the environment to buy local, in-season fruit and veg. Rather than eating food that's traveled across the ocean, enjoy fresh produce that truly is fresh--it's just come from the farm after all!
Supporting Your Local Community
When you shop at a farmers market, you are supporting farmers from your community, pouring money back into small businesses, and sustaining the local economy. This is true whether you buy produce, honey, or soap at the artisan booths. It's a win-win!
