4 Foods to Try in Your Next Smoothie

I don't know about you, but I tend to drink a lot more smoothies in the summer months. Maybe it's the warm weather or the fact that many fruits are fresh and readily available at the farmers' markets. Whatever the reason, I love blending up all those goodies for my morning meal, and only recently, have I been adding a few extra ingredients. If you're like me, and a creature of habit, try throwing these healthy and nutritious foods into your next morning blend. You may be surprised to discover how much you love them!

1. Avocados

I love avocados on everything, but it was only a few weeks ago that I decided to toss one into a smoothie. I especially love this to avoid food waste - I often use any avocados that are just a tad bit too ripe for toast or salads. Avocados are nutritious, high in vitamins, and an excellent source of fat. They also make smoothies incredibly creamy.

2. Celery

Celery is an excellent food to toss in your smoothies because, well, you can't really taste it. That means you get all the added benefits -Vitamin K, fiber, antioxidants - without the flavor (I prefer my smoothies taste fruity, not bitter). If you struggle to incorporate this plant into your diet, try adding it to your next morning beverage.

3. Flaxseed

Ground flaxseed is an excellent source of omega-3, as well as protein and fiber. I eat a lot of flaxseed as my diet is primarily plant-based, but I had never considered throwing a scoop or two in my smoothie. Considering you can't taste it, and it just gets blended up with all the berry and banana, it's definitely worth adding in!

4. Cilantro

I'll be honest, I haven't actually tried adding cilantro to my smoothies yet, but it's on my list! I've heard from health experts and plant-based influencers alike that cilantro is a wonderful addition to blended up beverages. And with a laundry list of nutrients and antioxidants, it's definitely a food I want to consume regularly.
