In a recent blog post, we talked about some of our favorite exercises for toning our legs during the summer. We also talked about body positivity and how we're passionate about eradicating shame-based messages, especially those that are prevalent when the weather gets warmer (you can read more here).
We love toning our muscles, but not because we want to fit into a social construct or standard. Instead, we love working out because it makes us feel good and strong and healthy. With that being said, here are a few of our favorite exercises for toning our arms up in the warmer months:
1. SHOULDER PRESS
Shoulder presses primarily work your deltoids muscles and, when correctly done, they can be a great way to strengthen and tone your arms. You can do shoulder presses in a variety of ways, including with dumbbells, kettlebells, or resistance bands.
Do ten to fifteen shoulder presses on each arm, depending on the weight/resistance, and aim for completing two to four sets. Alternatively, you can do shoulder presses on both arms at the same time.
2. OVERHEAD TRICEP EXTENSIONS
Tricep extensions can also be done with dumbbells, a kettlebell, or a resistance band. Just make sure you're using both hands to hold the weight and keeping your arms close to your ears. Pause at the top once you've straightened your arm to maximize the movement. Like with shoulder presses, your sets will depend on your weight or resistance. Shoot for at least ten reps and three sets.
3. UPRIGHT ROW
Work your upper trapezius, deltoids, and biceps with upright rows. We recommend using dumbbells for this one or a barbell. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and bring the weight to your chest. Use an overhand grip and aim for at least two sets of ten or more reps.
4. PUSHUPS
It's the one we all love to hate, but let's be honest, it's because it hurts so good! Push-ups are an excellent workout for toning and strengthening your arms, and we love that you can do them anytime and anywhere. Add some dumbbells or put your feet up on an incline for an extra challenge!
