How to Take Care of Your Body During Life’s Busiest Seasons

Getting to the gym every day, especially during busier months, can be a challenge. When our calendars get full, or you need to stay late at work, it can be easy to skip out on exercise and opt instead for the cozy couch. But skipping your workout session doesn’t have to mean forgoing exercise altogether. Even if you aren’t able to get a sweat sesh in or show up for your fitness class, you can engage in exercise that is beneficial to your body. Here’s how:

Stretching alone isn’t going to help you reach your fitness goals, but research shows that it does help. While we are huge advocates of the mental and physical benefits of yoga a few times a week, your body will still love you for taking a few moments to stretch every day. You can read our stretching guide for more details.

Walk. And use the stairs.

This probably isn’t news to you, but walking is extremely beneficial for your heart and overall cardiovascular health. Not only does movement help you to burn calories, but it can help to keep your metabolism active during those long hours at your desk. Walk when you can. Even if it means parking your car farther away for your two o’clock meeting, do it. Those small steps count. And always, always take the stairs.

Wall sits.

Did you know that 31 million Americans experience back pain? It’s not too hard to believe with so many of us spending our days at desks, in the car, or on the couch. Help to alleviate any pain you may be experiencing while also strengthening your quads and core by doing wall sits. These are perfect to do in the morning while you wait for the coffee to brew.

Push-ups and planks.

Two more fairly simple and quick exercises that are easy to do first thing in the morning or after you get home from work are push-ups and planks. The average person can do around 20 push-ups in under 2 minutes, so you really have no excuse for lack of time. And planks? Another great core exercise while waiting for that morning coffee!

Of course, we always recommend prioritizing your fitness and overall wellbeing, but we also know it’s not always possible every day of the week. Sometimes different seasons call for different priorities, which is why we hope you can still find a few moments to engage in movement that is beneficial to your body. It will thank you in the long run.
