Did you know, on average, July and August are the warmest months in Colorado? With an average temperature of 83 degrees, it’s essential to stay safe and cool while exercising outside during the summer (as well as wear sunscreen). Because workouts are always more fun outdoors (and why not take advantage of the warm days!?), here are a few tips for exercising in the heat:
1. Stay Hydrated
We’ve been emphasizing this A LOT this summer, and it’s because it is super important. Staying hydrated is not only beneficial to your overall health and fitness goals, but it is crucial for staying safe during these extra hot days. Drink H2O before, during, and after your workouts. Drink when you first wake up and keep drinking all day long. We can’t stress how important hydration is. Plus, your body and skin will thank you for it. Hydration=glowing skin and a fast-working metabolism.
2. Drink Cold Beverages
According to one study, drinking a cold beverage (we recommend ice-cold water) before your workout can help to cool your body and prolong your energy during workouts. Experts recommend hydrating a lot at least two hours before you exercise outdoors, and then drinking a cold beverage about 30-minutes before your workout. Benefits include a lower heart rate, lower skin temperature, and the ability to work out harder and longer—even in the heat.
3. Load Up on Carbs and Electrolytes
Use electrolyte powders (avoid sugary sports drinks) to help replenish your body with sodium and potassium after your sweat-sash, and eat a lot of carbs before an intense, prolonged workout that will require a lot of endurance.
4. Opt for Morning or Evening Workouts
On extra hot days this summer, try to get your workout in early in the morning or as the sun is going down. Lower temps will allow you to work out longer and harder without falling victim to the heat. Plus, it’s just more comfortable to workout in cooler temps.
