4 Ways to Stay Healthy This Summer

healthy summerHappy first week of summer! The days are heating up here in Colorado and we couldn’t be more excited to soak up some Vitamin D and explore the outdoors.

A few reminders for our Vukoo tribe, it’s more important than ever to take care of your body in the summer. Do these four things every day for a happy, healthy season!

1. Drink More Water

Water is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. While you should be drinking water every day (and a lot of it), you may need to drink even more in the summer months to account for excess sweating, time spent in the sun, and summer activities. Water not only helps with hydration, but it also benefits your skin, combats fatigue, flushes out unwanted bacteria, helps digestion, and prevents headaches.

Practice healthy hydration habits and carry a water bottle with you at all times this summer. Try to drink water with every meal, as well as first thing in the morning. You don’t have to avoid all the yummy summer drinks, just ensure water is your number one beverage this summer—especially when spending all day in the heat.

2. Apply Sunscreen

In Colorado, we are more at risk for sunburn because of the high elevation. To protect your skin against burns, aging, unwanted freckles, wrinkles, and skin cancer, apply sunscreen every day. Even if you are only walking the dog or lounging in the park, you should be wearing SPF.

Additionally, protect your skin from excess exposure by wearing hats while hiking or spending all day outdoors. Reapply every few hours, especially if swimming or boating, and wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection to shield your eyes from the harmful rays.

3. Indulge in Large Salads

Hot weather calls for large, colorful salads just like chilly fall days are best for bowls of soup. Indulge in ripe summer produce and treat your body to weekly, if not daily, salads. Try the Bohemian Summer Salad from One Green Planet or the Anything Goes Kale Salad by Cookie and Kate!

Shop organic and local when possible and check with your city for summer farmers markets.

4. Morning Juice

Aside from water, juicing is a great way to stay hydrated, as well as feed your body amazing vitamins and nutrients. With so many fruits and vegetables in season, now is a perfect time to incorporate juicing into your diet. Try some of our favorite green juice recipes to kickstart the first weekend of summer!
