Hydration Habits for Healthy Living

hydration habits

Struggling to stay hydrated? Drinking water throughout the day can be one of the hardest health habits to consistently practice, but it’s so important. Without enough water, our metabolisms, immune systems, and overall health suffer. There are calculators online that can tell you the recommended amount of water for your height and weight, although we recommend consulting your doctor for accuracy. Just remember, the more active you are, the more water you need.

Here are a few of our favorite tips for staying hydrated:

Carry a reusable water bottle with you at all times.

We love the Platypus Hydration Pack for outdoor activities and a lightweight, foldable option. And for working out, we love the Klean Kanteen Sport CapIt has a leak-proof cap, it's easy to drink from, and it's made of food-grade stainless steel. Whichever water bottle you prefer, carrying it at all times encourages you to drink more water.

16 oz in the morning.

Want to practice good hydration habits? Drink 16 oz of water first thing in the morning. It’s not only a good pick-me-up, but your body is dehydrated from 8+ hours of fasting. Water in the morning rehydrates you, flushes out toxins, and jumpstarts your metabolism. Keep a full water bottle by your bed or next to your toothbrush in the bathroom for an easy reminder.

Water with every meal.

Make it a habit of eating every meal (including snacks) alongside 16 oz of water. Like our parents used to tell us, you’re not allowed to leave the table until everything is finished—including your glass of water.

Water before AND after alcohol.

Breweries are all the rage in Colorado, and for good reason. Monitor your alcohol consumption and hydration by drinking a glass of water before and after every pint of beer (or any other alcoholic beverage). And if you want to up your hydration game, practice this habit with any and every beverage that isn’t water.

Drink with intention.

Why is it so easy to forget to drink water? If you are incredibly busy like most of and not so great at habit #1 on this list, a whole day can pass before you realize you are parched. By taking a few moments out of the day to intentionally stop and drink a glass of water though, you can improve hydration and overall health. Tips and tricks we have found useful include setting alarms on our phone or sports watch. When the buzzer goes off, it means it’s time to stop and drink a glass of water (it only takes a few moments!).
