Drink Your Tea: 10 Reasons Tea is Good for Your Health (and Your Soul)

Doesn’t fall just make you want to curl up with a big book and warm cup of tea? Mmmm. Us too.

It’s almost November (we can hardly believe it) and the days continue to get colder, darker, and crisper in Colorado. Alongside big bowls of soup, we are constantly putting the kettle on the stove for a morning, midday, and evening cup of green tea, black tea, herbal tea, hibiscus tea—you name it. Not only is tea warm and tasty, but it has some wonderful health benefits that keep us wanting more. Here are a few:

1. Green tea contains catechins (antioxidants) which help your body burn fat as fuel during workouts. Studies show that this helps to boost your endurance while exercising, as well as improve your muscle endurance overall.

2. Some studies have also shown green tea to benefit bone health and decrease your risk of osteoporotic bone fractures.

3. A preliminary study has shown that nettle leaf tea can ward of seasonal allergies (we will definitely be giving it a try come spring).

4. Black tea improves digestion AND reduces cholesterol. Win-win.

5. Peppermint and ginger teas have also been shown to aid stomach pains, nausea, and bloating.

6. Both milk thistle and dandelion tea can cleanse your liver. Also, how much do you feel like a tea connoisseur if you have dandelion tea in your cupboard?

7. Chamomile tea reduces stress and enhances health through antioxidant properties. It has also been said to reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol. It’s a recommended tea to aid sleep.

8. Lavender tea—aside from smelling wonderful—is another sleep aid. It also helps relieve congestion and cough.

9. For our women readers, hibiscus tea has been said to relieve menstrual cramps, restore hormonal balance, and reduce symptoms from menstruation such as mood swings and depression.

10. Finally, green tea is said to aid weight loss because it contains EGCG (Epigallacatechin gallate), a potent antioxidant that boosts metabolism. EGCG also helps break down fat cells so they can be used by the body for energy.
